Yogurt comes in plastic pots  and I of course refuse to use one use disposables. So the pots have to go,but who can live without yogurt? Not us, so I had to learn how to make my own.

I had heard of how you could make it in a flask but I just ended up with curds and whey and an evil-smelling flask.

Then VB  remembered how they used to make it back in the village  of his birth. He ended up with curds and whey and evil-smelling blankets.

Yoghurt Makers

So I bought me an Easy Yo Yogurt maker – – really easy – just mix the contents of the sachet with water – yes that’s right – the plastic foil sachet that came in the plastic packed box. Didnt think it through. Not best pleased – it did make very good yogurt though. If only they sold the mix in a jar – or cardboard box. Ho hum back to the drawing board.

Finally got me an electric yogurt maker from Lakeland – mail order. The yogurt is made in a plastic container -BPA free for those of you worried about leaching chemicals. It works really well. So although it is a plastic product I feel it is worth it as it cuts our overall plastic consumption. It does make good yogurt and is very easy to use. If you are busy I would recommend getting one of these.

Update

Trying Homemade Again Since then VB has re-learnt his yogurt making skills and now makes it in a pan which he leaves wrapped in a blanket overnight. Completely plastic free.

Moving to Spain where they sell yogurt in glass jars. Only joking – would never buy yogurt in glass jars. Not good for the environment.

  1. No I dont either – everyone else seems to be able to make yogurt in a flask but me. But I also cant grow courgettes so while all others on the allotment are groaning under the weight of barrowloads of the things mine are wilting. On the other hand my cucumbers are the envy of all. So blessed with cukes cursed with yogurt – win some loose some – thats life I recon. Thanks for the crock pot recipie

  2. Congratulations on finding a method that works for you!

    The Easy Yo yoghurt maker should still work using active yoghurt as a starter – no need to buy a new sachet each time. I have a different yoghurt maker (shorter and fatter than the Easy Yo) but it works on the same principle. I save about 1/2 cup of yoghurt from the previous batch to use as the starter for the next batch.

    So far the only hassle I’ve struck is that the starter yoghurt can’t be too old, e.g. over a week (I read this in an online forum post). Since I left it too long between batches last time, I did buy another starter pack. If I was more disciplined about keeping the starter culture fresh, I wouldn’t have needed to do that.

  3. don’t know what you were doing wrong, but yogurt is dead easy. First bring your milk to a boil. Let it cool. Add about a tablespoon of unflavored yogurt as a starter, stir, and cover. I live in NC, where daytime temps hit the upper 90’s. I set my yogurt outside for about 24 hours, and when it’s fairly firm textured, it’s done. In the winter time, I pour boiling water into my crock pot, invert the lid, and set the bowl of yogurt-to-be on top of the lid. The boiling water will keep it warm enough. I generally have to replace the water a couple of times, say when I get home from work and again the next morning. But again I’ll have yogurt in about 24 hours. Since it isn’t gelled with pectin like commercial yogurt you’ll find the texture more soupy than you may be used to, but the flavor it so much better! Good luck to you!
